Hollywood acting studio trains Kapuso stars

MANILA, Philippines -- In its continuing effort to give its stable of artists quality and worthwhile training to hone their talents and further their craft in the entertainment industry, GMA Artist Center (GMAAC) management pulled out all the stops to bring the expertise of an international acting studio in Hollywood right here in the Philippines.
Ron Burrus, master acting coach of the famed Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York, visited Manila recently to specifically host an acting workshop for Filipino actors. GMA Artist Center talents were among the privileged few in attendance.
The Kapuso stars, along with veteran actors from other groups, who have been privileged to join the esteemed group of students under coach Burrus were Iza Calzado, Kris Bernal, Bela Padilla, Rocco Nacino, Bianca King, Enzo Pineda, Victor Aliwalas, Sarah Lahbati, Gino dela Pena, Ian Batherson, Sef Cadayona, Rita Iringan, Jayanne Bautista, Justine Ferrer, Diva Montelaba, Marvin Kiefer, Luane Dy, Gretchen Espina, Bodie Cruz, Stef Prescot, Steven Silva, and Stephanie Henares, among others.
These GMAAC talents now share the distinction with some Hollywood greats who have been tutored and trained under the Stella Adler school of acting. These Hollywood alumni include Robert De Niro, Kevin Costner, Benicio del Toro, Martin Sheen, Melanie Griffith and the late Marlon Brando, who is often considered the greatest actor of all time.
The week-long workshop was held last month in Arts in the City, Taguig. Burrus shared his expertise in on-camera acting to local stars, with character actor Nanding Josef of Tanghalang Pilipino serving as Filipino facilitator.
"Filipino actors are underused. They have more skills than what they are actually using.” Burrus remarked in an interview after one of the sessions.
The acting technique was developed by Stella Adler, who studied under acting icon Constantin Stanislavsky. The institution of the Acting Studio ensured that its secrets would be passed on from one generation of actors to another—and across continents as well. The seminars have been brought from New York to France, Italy, Germany, Japan, and now, to Manila.
According to Tata Nanding, the studio is planning to set up a branch here in the Philippines. This is great news for Filipino actors—they may be given opportunities in Hollywood now that Burrus has seen the potential in Filipino talent.
Iza Calzado, already considered one of the best actresses in Philippine cinema, acknowledges the great privilege she just got in this workshop. "I wanted to study acting abroad and further push my craft. But I can't be gone too long. So being in a Stella Adler workshop is worth like going abroad na rin," she said. Iza, who is not new to Hollywood projects, having starred in the American version of the Yam Laranas thriller "Echo" and acted opposite Jesse Bradford, says she is learning a lot about real acting even without the use of words and movements.
Stephanie Henares, for her part, says this workshop is integral in her growth as an actress especially now that she is dabbling more on character acting (first in the just-concluded “Machete” and soon in the indie film “Paglipad ng Anghel”). She said, “to get into a character is perhaps the most challenging task for me yet. But I’m finding out that it’s not a world of difference in hosting. Hosting is being who you are in front of the camera. Acting is hosting but not as yourself."

The twists and turns in the life of Mel Tiangco

"Ganito pala 'kako mag-artista."

Mel Tiangco is not talking about starring in a lead role for a show, she's reminiscing her experience as host of her defunct weekly anthology program Magpakailanman.

She sees this show as way more difficult than the one she's hosting now,Powerhouse. The new show will feature the amazing houses and the private lives of the country's newsmakers.

"Mahirap.

It's a different stroke for her lifestyle show on GMA-7 every Sunday. Laughing, she says,  "Iba ito.

Almost seven years of working as co-hosts, the newscaster reveals that in one way or another, she and the comedian have influenced each other.

"Ibang tao si Joey, e...Pagdating sa Mel & Joey, he doesn't hide it, he shows every part. He says that to everybody."

For her part, the show serves as a breather from primetime news program 24 Oras, where she has to look always formal.

"I love it. Kasi alam niyo, masyado akong ano, e, napaka-stiff ng personality ko, yung proper masyado, yung ganun..."

But when asked what she enjoys more, Mel couldn't pinpoint which. Newscasting has been part of her life for the longest time, while hosting is something new and exciting.

"Alam mo, hindi ko na masasagot 'yan. You know why? Kasi all of that has become my lifestyle, e.

LOOKING BACK: THE TRANSFER.  Talking about her life as a TV personality,  Mel also relates the struggles that she had to go through before making it to where she is now.

It will be recalled that the first 10 years of her career had been with the ABS-CBN network. She moved to GMA-7 after the Kapamilya management deemed her appearance in a TV commercial for a popular laundry detergent a violation.

Looking back, Mel feels grateful to the Kapuso network, which took good care of her.

"Wala, pagpunta ko dito [GMA], after a few months, I had my heart attack. Then the GMA Management, ang bait, bait nila, they are so good to me. Biruin mo, wala pa kong trabahong nagagawa, they took care of my hospital bills, and we're talking here of millions..."

These struggles tested her strength and perseverance. She says she remained positive and saw her decision as God's plan for her.

"Let me put it this way, I really feel that this is providential. It is really God telling me where to go. This makes me feel that He's really giving me a mission kung ano gagawin ko."

And it was GMA-7 "that helped a lot" and "supported you all the way."

LOOKING FORWARD: HELPING PEOPLE. In return, she gives back via GMA Kapuso Foundation, which appointed her as its executive vice president and chief operating officer.

GMA Kapuso Foundation is a project by GMA Network initially to aid  the victims of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption in 1991. From then on, the Foundation has continually rendered service by giving relief supplies to the victims of different calamities, as well as assisting ailing patients through the allotted segment "Kapusong Totoo" in 24 Oras.

But after dedicating herself to the masses for so many years, she thinks there's still more for her to do in her life.

"I still feel that there's still really something left to do.

When politics was suggested to her, she quickly said no. Even though being in politics could allow her to help people more, she wants to be in public service without politics getting in her way.

"Without being in politics. That's how I want it, without being in politics. Kung baga, Cory Aquino na hindi tumakbo. Parang gusto ko ganun, yung nae-envision ko."

She revealed that her reason for not entering politics is her fear of losing God's grace.

Kasi I'm doing my public service without nothing in return. Just my love for public service, my love for my people, my country, sabi ko pag ako tumakbo ng politics, baka mababawasan."

Her apprehension doesn't stop her though from asking God to give her the chance to make her own mark in people's hearts.

"Parang ang ambisyon ko na God will give me the opportunity to really make a positive mark to the lives of my countrymen. I don't even know what I want. All I want is magkaroon sana ako ng ganun pagkakataon," says Mel Tiangco.

Regine Velasquez confirms rumors: "Dumating na ang aming bundle of joy."

"Totoo po na Ogie and I are going to have a baby."

"Ngayon po, parang clear na naman lahat, siguradong-sigurado na rin naman kami... it's true, Ogie and I might have a baby. And it's a happy birthday gift for me and for my husband."

Kasi, ang plano nga po is to finish I Heart You Pare. Unfortunately, I was not able to do that kasi dumating na nga po ang aming bundle of joy.

It took me a while to finally decide na iwan na nga 'yong show. So ngayon, I'm at home. I'm supposed to be there to celebrate my birthday also but hindi ko po kayang gawin dahil in-advise po ako ng aming doctor to stay in bed for a while.

Patuloy niyo po sanang subaybayan ang Party Pilipinas and I Heart You Pare.

Sagot naman ni Regine, "I'm on my seventh week. Two months na."

"I just crave for some particular type of food. But then, after I eat it, I don't like it anymore.

"I miss being there performing. But I think I'm too fat to be there right now," sabi ni Regine.

"This is probably one of the happiest birthdays na nagkaroon ako. My wish is for my baby to be healthy.

Alam niyo naman, first trimester."

Regine Velasquez-Alcasid has yet to confirm report that she is five weeks pregnant

Paliwanag niya, ngayon lang siya uli inatake ng kanyang migraine after two years.

IS REGINE REALLY PREGNANT?

Regine will turn 41 on April 22.
