GMA News and Public Affairs programs win big in Gandingan and USTv Awards!

Various GMA News and Public Affairs programs and personalities recently gained recognition from two of the country’s top universities in their respective annual awards programs.

Sixteen awards were given to GMA Network, two of which are Hall of Fame trophies, by the UP Community Broadcasters’ Society of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) in the recently concluded Gandingan 2011: The 5th UPLB Isko’t Iska’s Broadcast Choice Award.

Leading the Kapuso awardees are multi-awarded broadcast journalist Jessica Soho as Best Magazine Program Host; Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho as Best Magazine Program; Vicky Morales as Best Public Affairs Program Host; Howie Severino and Kara David as this year’s Best Documentarists; I-Witness as Best Documentary Program; Jiggy Manicad as Best Investigative Program Host; Reporter’s Notebook as Best Investigative Program; and Imbestigador as Best Public Service Program.

I-Witness and Howie Severino both made it to this year’s Hall of Fame for consecutively bagging the Best Documentary Program and Best Documentarist awards, respectively, since 2007.

In Gandingan’s Special Category, GMA-7’s Eleksyon 2010 special “Kandidato” was awarded as Best Educational Program while GMA News Pillar Mike Enriquez was given the Gandingan ng Edukasyon. A special citation of the same title was also awarded to Kapuso star Richard Gutierrez while his environmental documentary Planet Philippines won as Best Environment-Oriented Program.

Channel 11’s former lifestyle talk show The Sweet Life, meanwhile, was also recognized as the Best Women-Oriented Program.

A number of Kapuso programs also took the spotlight in the University of Santo Tomas’ 7th UST Student’s Choice Awards for Television (USTv).

GMA Network’s flagship newscast 24 Oras was named as Best Local News & Current Affairs Program; I-Witness won the Best Documentary Program award; and Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho was awarded as Best Magazine Program.

GMA-7’s Entertainment programs Bubble Gang, Pepito Manaloto, Hole in the Wall, and Mel & Joey also bagged the awards Best Gag Show, Best Sitcom, Best Game Show, and Best Talk Variety Program, respectively.

Also adding to GMA-7’s list of recognitions from the academe this year is a special citation for Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho from St. Scholastica’s College’s Hildegarde Awards for Outstanding Women in Media and Communication for its “outstanding achievements in media by, for, and about women.” –Text courtesy of GMA Network
